Five natural grass fields are kept in top condition to serve as the main training ground for the Men’s & Women’s USA Rugby Sevens National Teams. Rugby Sevens was introduced to the Olympic program in 2016 and a resident program was established in Chula Vista for the USA Rugby Sevens National Teams in 2011. Athletes trained here with the goal of qualifying for and performing on the international stage in Rugby’s Olympic debut for women and first return to the Olympic program for men since it was last previously included in the 1924 Olympic Games in the 15-player Rugby Union format. The USA Rugby Sevens Women’s National Team finished in fifth place at the 2016 Olympic Games and the Men’s National Team finished in ninth place. Both teams are working hard in Chula Vista to increase those finishes to podium position at the next World Cup tournaments and the Olympic Games in 2020. The USA Rugby 15s National Team now has an increased presence at the CVEATC with regular camps being held alongside the Rugby 7s resident program.
The multipurpose grass fields proved a popular training venue for soccer with the U.S. Women’s National Team programs, Paralympic National Team and various professional teams holding training camps.
Lacrosse and any other sport played on grass can be accommodated on these venues. Everything from community events to international scrimmages have taken place on the fields.
