The athletics complex is an eight-lane 400-meter polyurethane running track with a 12-lane 100-meter straightaway and the infield features long & triple jump, pole vault and high jump pits. There is a separate and adjacent six-acre throwing area for hammer throw, javelin throw, shot put and discus.
Year-round warm weather makes this a popular training venue for international athletes and American athletes alike. World champions, Olympic and Paralympic medalists use this venue on a daily basis. From those who trained in the Chula Vista jump pits, Jeff Henderson, Will Claye and Brittney Reese claimed 2016 Olympic medals while Lex Gillette, guided by Wesley Williams, claimed his fourth Paralympic medal and a World Champion title while residing and training in Chula Vista. David Brown hit his stride on the track to take gold in the visually impaired 100m race at the 2016 Paralympic Games while guided by Jerome Avery. Using the throwing field as his primary training ground, Joe Kovacs claimed a 2016 Olympic Silver medal and a 2015 World Champion title in the shot put.
Sanctioned USA Track & Field (USATF) track meets are held each spring drawing athletes from around the world in search of hitting the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standards to qualify for World Championships and Olympic Games.
